A Turning Point in Mid-Market Digitalization — ZEMID at digitalBAU 2026

Ralf Schmidt auf der digitalBAU 2026 in Köln

    Cologne, March 25, 2026

The construction industry has been discussing digitalization for years. At digitalBAU 2026 in Cologne, ZEMID founder Ralf Schmidt put forward a thesis that reaches beyond the industry: Digitalization doesn't fail because of technology. It fails because of leadership.

The Gap Nobody Wants to Close

The numbers are well known — and still uncomfortable. According to a 2025 PwC study on the construction industry, 62 percent of surveyed companies see great opportunities in new technologies like AI, IoT, and digital visualization. At the same time, only 10 percent say they have the capabilities to actually seize those opportunities.

This 52-percentage-point gap is not a technology problem. There is no shortage of vendors, solutions, or budgets. What's missing is decision-making capability.

    Consensus Trap Instead of Course

A central pattern that ZEMID regularly observes in consulting practice: mid-market companies are stuck in consensus-oriented decision processes. Many voices, long alignment loops, and in the end a compromise — but no clear course. In stable markets, this is manageable. In a phase of technological acceleration, it is dangerous.

Speed doesn't come from more alignment — it comes from clear accountability. Whoever decides, is accountable — and that's exactly what creates commitment.

    Three Levers for More Speed

At digitalBAU, ZEMID presented three concrete approaches that companies can use to immediately pick up transformation speed:

MVP instead of RFP. Tender processes take months and deliver paper. A Minimum Viable Product shows in six weeks whether the solution and vendor truly fit the company — and significantly reduces decision risk.

Make AI a C-suite priority. Whoever delegates AI to the IT department gets a technology project. Whoever anchors AI strategically at leadership level gets competitive advantage. The difference is not in the software, but in the governance.

Dare the system switch. Legacy software is not a neutral status quo — it's an ongoing cost factor. Every year with outdated systems, companies pay in workarounds, lost time, and declining employer attractiveness.

    Transformation Is a Leadership Decision

The core message of the talk can be condensed into one sentence: Transformation is a leadership decision, not a procurement process. Those who start with 80 percent are further ahead than those who wait for 100 percent. Perfection is not a competitive advantage — speed is.

ZEMID Launches ZEMbid: RFP Automation with Private AI

To coincide with the conference, ZEMID unveiled a new solution at digitalBAU 2026: ZEMbid — an AI platform that automates the entire bid and tender process. From structured intake of the request through AI-powered draft generation to submission-ready delivery.

What sets ZEMbid apart from other AI solutions is its data privacy approach: the platform runs on dedicated EU infrastructure, is air-gapped, GDPR-compliant, and SOC 2 Type II certified. Confidential tender data never leaves the protected system — NDA compliance is architecturally embedded, not just contractually promised.

80 percent of responses are automatically pre-qualified. Experts focus on the remaining critical questions. The result: shorter turnaround times, higher bid quality, less last-minute chaos.
